How IPC-A-610 Workmanship Class Affects Reliability, Inspection and Cost

IPC-A-610 defines acceptance criteria for finished electronic assemblies across three product classes: Class 1 for general electronic products with limited performance requirements, Class 2 for dedicated service products requiring continued performance and extended life, Class 3 for high-performance products where continued operation is critical, and equipment downtime cannot be tolerated.
The distinction is often reduced to “tighter tolerances,” but the implications extend well beyond individual tolerance criteria. Class selection affects workmanship requirements, acceptance criteria, inspection rigor, process control, documentation, and ultimately manufacturing cost.
While Class 1 establishes the baseline, this paper focuses on the more consequential distinction between Classes 2 and 3. It examines where Class 2 and Class 3 requirements differ, and where they do not, and explains how those differences affect manufacturing, inspection, reliability expectations, and cost.
SMT vs. Through-Hole: Choosing The Right Assembly Process

Surface mount technology (SMT) dominates modern electronics assembly, enabling high component density, fine-pitch devices, automated placement, and cost-effective production at volume. Through-hole technology (THT), however, remains important where solder joints must withstand greater mechanical loads, carry higher current, or support connectors subjected to repeated insertion and removal. For many PCB assemblies, the right solution is not one technology or the other, but a deliberate combination of both.
That choice has consequences beyond component attachment. Mixing technologies can add soldering processes, handling, tooling, inspection, and labor, all of which can affect first-pass yield, cycle time, and assembly cost. The way SMT and THT components are divided across the board therefore becomes an important design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and cost decision.

Ten DFM Checks That Reduce PCB Assembly Cost Before Quotation

The cost of an assembly is largely committed the moment the design data package leaves engineering, long before the first quote is returned. Ambiguous fabrication notes, nonstandard land patterns, unbalanced thermal pads, and components selected without regard to sourcing risk all introduce costs that my be invisible on the schematic.
This paper presents ten Design for Manufacturability (DFM) checks that can reduce PCB assembly costs across the manufacturing value chain, from bare board fabrication and SMT/THT assembly to mixed-technology processing, test, and system integration. Each check identifies a common failure mode, explains how it drives costs, and highlights changes that can be made early in the design cycle, when fixes are easiest and least expensive.
Written for both design engineers and sourcing professionals, the paper provides a common framework for addressing design, component selection, and supply-chain decisions that can accelerate quoting, reduce respins, improve first-pass yield, and lower total cost throughout the life of the program.

New Equipment Alert! In-Line Destacker

We recently expanded automation at Revco Products Inc. with the addition of another In-Line Destacker from Mycronic, now fully integrated into our SMT line.
Already in operation, the added Destacker increases throughput consistency, reduces manual board handling, and improves line balance across mixed-volume builds. Automating the loading process enhances repeatability and helps maintain tighter process control at the front end of assembly.
Technology is only as strong as the team behind it. We are proud of our SMT engineers who continue optimizing our lines and driving continuous improvement.
